Be a friend to the birds

What would you do to get to know new friends?  You might want to learn all about them, for example their behaviour, their favourite food, things they like to do at different times of the year, etc.

Better yet, pay them a visit,

and bring them some food.

If you're very handy, you might help them build a house.

A robin house

Or even a customised, dainty feeder (something similar to one of those 'World's Greatest Mum' type of mug).

Then have great fun watching your friends show appreciation for your effort by using your gift to them very often.

If your friends are very important and famous (as ours are), you might even take part in a national survey about them and journal all about them.

If your friends were really cool, you might even persuade your Mum to journal about them too!

I like the way all these activities are combined.... building a house, writing, exercise, outdoor time, reading. It's awesome.

We studied birds too. If you ever get a chance to witness bird banding I highly recommend it. http://highhillhomeschool.blogspot.com/2012/02/bird-banding-station-bird-unit.html

I love the drawings in your nature journal - you are very talented! I'd love to be able to portray the beauty I see onto paper. Alas, I can't. Tiger has obviously inherited his mummy's talent!

Julie, thanks for the tips. I haven't seen bird banding going on in England, but maybe I have to look harder. Your own study of birds is fantastic. Lots of good ideas there. :-)

Thanks for your kind words, Claire. I was inspired by Edith Holden's nature journal so I gave it a go. It's less about talent and more about just giving it a go. I draw for my own pleasure, and to keep Tiger company, so it doesn't matter even if my drawings don't turn out perfect. Readers of this blog are polite, so nobody will say anything unkind even if they don't like my art. :-)

Mainly I post my art to encourage other parents to join in with their children in their activities.

I love all your birds activities, we are going to start a bird unit up soon.

Oh, your nature studies and journaling are so inspiring!!!! You might like this simple idea related to birding that I did with my kiddoes for a friend of theirs: http://traininghappyhearts.blogspot.com/2010/02/works-for-me-wednesday-vol-2-homemade.html

We are studying birds this month too for our nature study. Lots of fun even with all the snow we've got going on here in Ohio. I love all the pictures you have!

Michelle Cannon

I love it! It all meshes together well. How creative of you!

Lorraine

great post! I love it!

A Learning Journey

Loved reading your post! Your nature journal is outstanding! I wish I could draw like that. My daughter loved learning about birds. We also did a bird study unit in August - I reviewed Homeschool Legacy's Bird Unit. We had a blast! It looks like you did too!

I'm linking to a few blogs who have inspired a recent change to our science (you're one of them) Would you mind if I linked to this post?

Hwee

No problem, Claire. Go ahead and link us up. We'll be honoured if you do so. :-)
